Bloomberg (paywalled) are reporting that Sony have slashed the shipment forecast numbers for the Sony PlayStation VR2. Poor preorder numbers due to the high retail cost of the PS VR2 are one possible reason for this. The PS VR2 will cost $549 / £530 which is more than a PlayStation 5 console, couple that with the PS VR2 only working on the PlayStation 5 and this makes the decision to buy even more difficult in these struggling economic times. Bloomberg cite sources close to the matter reveal that the shipment forecast for Sony’s PS VR2 headset has taken a significant hit, with expectations now set at one million units. This marks a sharp decline from the initial goal of two million ready-to-ship units.

Furthermore, Sony has alerted its supply chain partner to anticipate decreased orders for PS VR2 display panels. From April 2023 to March 2024, the company forecasts shipping 1.5 million units, though this estimate could fluctuate based on consumer demand. Sony declined to disclose information regarding its product stock.

The VR industry still faces hurdles in achieving mainstream popularity, with cost being a major barrier to entry. Currently, Meta dominates the VR headset market, with its Quest 2 holding a commanding 85% share. Sony’s PS VR2, with its exclusive compatibility with the PlayStation 5 and a premium price point, may not pose a direct threat to established players. However, the company is likely pinning its hopes on exclusive PS VR2 titles to attract both seasoned and new gamers to the VR space. Only time will tell if these strategies pay off, as the headset launches on February 22nd.
