The rumours were true. In a low-key press release Apple unveiled it’s latest M-class chipsets with the introduction of the M2 Pro and M2 Max SoCs. These powerful new additions will be featured in the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros. The updated Mac mini will now receive the option of the M2 and M2 Pro chipsets, the updated mini now boasts a starting price of $599, which is $100 cheaper than its predecessor.
The M2 Pro chipset boasts an impressive 40 billion transistors and offers significant improvements, including a 30% increase in graphics performance and a 40% faster Neural Engine. Additionally, it enables HDMI 2.1, allowing for 4K 240Hz or 8K 60Hz display output. The M2 Max, with its staggering 67 billion transistors, offers a 20% improvement in performance, particularly when rendering video or 3D models.
The new MacBook Pro models feature HDMI 2.1 connectivity, supporting up to four external displays, as well as Wi-Fi 6E, a first for Mac. The M2 Max model also offers the option for a maximum 96GB of memory. Apple advertises a 22-hour battery life for the M2 Pro and M2 Max MacBook Pros.
The M2 Mac mini, starting at $599, offers two Thunderbolt 4 ports and the improved performance of the M2, while the M2 Pro Mac mini offers four Thunderbolt 4 ports and the ability to support up to three external displays. There is no M2 Max option for the Mac Mini.
Pre-orders for these cutting-edge machines are available now, with the new MacBook Pros starting at $1,999 and the M2 Mac mini starting at $599. Shipping for pre-orders will begin on January 24th.
