New App from Instagram Co-Founders Aims to Take News Aggregation to the Next Level

There’s a new app from Instagram co-founders, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, who have resurfaced with a fresh new project – Artifact. The app is a news aggregation platform powered by an algorithm similar to TikTok’s, aimed at delivering a personalized experience. With the app, you’ll be greeted by a main feed featuring articles from popular sources like The New York Times, and as you read more, the recommendations will be tailored to your interests.

Systrom explained that Artifact’s recommendation system puts more emphasis on reading time instead of clicks and comments. The app will offer a balanced view of news from both left and right-leaning outlets, and posts spreading false information will not be tolerated. The app will eventually have a social aspect, featuring a feed that displays articles from people you follow, along with their commentary. You’ll also have the option to privately discuss posts through direct messaging.

For now, Systrom and Krieger are self-funding the project, and view Artifact as their vision for the future of social apps. You can sign up for the iOS and Android beta, there’s a waiting list but Systrom is promising that new users will be invited soon.
