Is it enough to take people away from Chrome?
Opera, the web browser company, is making a bold move into the realm of artificial intelligence. This week, they announced their plans to incorporate cutting-edge generative AI technology into their browser, starting with “Shorten”. This new feature, powered by the ChatGPT language model, will provide users with succinct summaries of articles and webpages. The new tool will be easily accessible from the browser, with a new icon appearing on the right of the address bar. Upon tapping the icon, a sidebar will open, showcasing a bullet-pointed summary of the webpage, courtesy of ChatGPT.
Jan Standel, Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Opera, has confirmed that “Shorten” will be available to users soon. The company is also working on other AI-powered features to enhance the user experience, although they have yet to reveal the specifics.
Opera’s move into AI comes in the same week that Microsoft announced its plans to revamp its Edge browser with an “AI-powered copilot”. The new Prometheus model, like Opera’s Shorten, will be able to summarize webpages. Meanwhile, Google has shared details of Bard, an AI chatbot powered by its LaMDA platform. These announcements, made in close proximity, suggest that Opera and Microsoft view generative AI as a way to challenge Google’s dominance in the browser market. However, it remains to be seen whether these additions will prompt users to switch from Google Chrome.
